recommended for safety purposes. Also, please keep your USA
identification with you at all times. Tennis, croquet, badminton, and
soccer equipment are also available for your use.

club. Nine cards will be available for student use. Because of the large
number of ESL students, there will be two departure times to use the gym

Grizzelle-Reid’s office is (414) 529-6988.
- Fire Alarm:
- Several times a year, the Fire Department rings the alarm system at
the school. It is a requirement of the state to check the fire systems
in the building. When you hear a loud alarm begin to ring, please leave
the building immediately. You will be told when to re-enter the
building.
- Gym:
- You are welcome to use the gym and the weight room in the basement
of the gym.
- Hygiene:
- American hygiene is very different from many other cultures.
Americans tend to be very fastidious about personal grooming. In order
to be acceptable in the American culture, each student will be provided
with personal hygiene items such as deodorant, shampoo, lip balm, hand
lotion, body wash, a toothbrush, and toothpaste. Americans are very
sensitive about body odor, and they shower daily. Because of the
humidity and the heat during the summer in the Milwaukee area, it is not
uncommon for residents to take two showers a day. At SHM/SHST, we
live very close together, so it is necessary to be aware of this and to
make sure that your clothes are always freshly washed and that you take
showers and use deodorant daily. Americans also change their
clothing every single day, including their socks, underwear, T-shirts,
shirts, and pants. American toilet hygiene is also different from many
other countries. In some cultures, people may stand on the toilet seat;
but in the United States we sit on the toilet. It is also necessary to
flush and to always wash your hands after using the toilet.
It is highly recommended to brush your teeth twice a day and to chew
mint gum to reduce bad breath. It is not acceptable to brush your teeth
in a public bathroom. It is important to wash your hands after using the
toilet. Most recently in the United States, it is less acceptable to
smoke cigarettes, cigars, or to chew tobacco. Bad breath is also
considered offensive in the American culture.
- Identification:
- Students will be issued identification cards for SHM/SHST. Please
keep these cards with you at all times because they include important
telephone numbers for the school.
- Laundry:
- Washers and dryers are available for student use in the basement. If
you would like fresh towels, washcloths, or sheets at midweek, put your
dirty items down the laundry bins located on all the floors; and you can
collect clean items in the laundry area. There will be a demonstration
during the first week of school on how to do your laundry. Please do
NOT use the laundry facilities located next to the SCJ Recreation
Room. There is not enough space in that area to accommodate all the ESL
students.
- Library:
- Students are welcome to use the Dehon Library facilities. When
checking out books, please sign your full name on the card next to the
book due date. Every book must be returned on time. Reference materials
and periodicals are for library use only, so please do not take them
from the library. Library hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on
weekdays. At other times, your GM-50 key will unlock the door. You are
welcome to use the facilities but please lock the door when you leave.
There will be a visit to the library during the first week of school.
The library also has computers with internet access available for
your use. Please use the library computers for your e-mail and
personal use. Do NOT use the ESL self-access lab computers.
The President-Rector, Fr. Jan de Jang, SCJ had instructed Mr. Tom
Weis, the Self-Access Computer Specialist, to give each of you an SHST
e-mail address.
- Mail:
- Outgoing mail may be deposited in the mail box in the SHM/SHST main
lobby beside the mail room. It is picked up at 9:30 a.m. and at 11:00
a.m. Monday through Friday.
The cost for mailing a foreign letter to any country in the world
(one sheet of paper and one envelope) is 84 cents and 70 cents for a
post card. A letter sent to Canada and Mexico is 63 cents and 50 cents
for a post card. A first class letter sent within the United States is
39 cents. Postcards sent within the United States are 24 cents. Students
should check with house drivers if they need to go to the post office.
- Medical Needs:
- If you need to visit a doctor or a dentist, please contact Fr. Paul.
Your appointment will be scheduled for Monday through Friday after
3:00 p.m. Wisconsin has experienced a very rainy and wet spring
season. Because of the rain, there probably be an abundance of
mosquitoes this summer. Please keep the window screens closed to avoid
infestation of the mosquitoes.
- Photocopies:
- There are two photocopy machines available for use: one is located in
the mailroom, the other is located downstairs in the print office.
- Rooms and Room Keys:
- When you arrive at SHM/SHST, you will be issued three keys. One key
will be to enter your room, another key (GM-50) is to enter the
building, and the other key (2X) is to enter the ESL classrooms. Please
return all the keys to Fr. Paul when you depart at the end of the
program. All rooms are private and include linen and in-room sinks.
Showers are available on each floor.
It is important that the window in your room be closed when you are
not in the room if there is any chance of rain. Summer storms can
occur quite suddenly and can cause damage to furniture and to your
personal items. When you leave the room for a long period, PLEASE CLOSE
AND LOCK YOUR WINDOW.
- Sacred Heart Shrine/Monastery Gardens and the SCJ
Mausoleum:
- In an effort to make the grounds of SHM/SHST a more reflective
space, the monastery, in collaboration with the Province Development
Office, has enhanced the Shrine and Mausoleum areas and created a wild
flower garden with walking paths near the Sacred Heart statue. You are
invited to visit these areas and to enjoy their beauty.
- Sacred Heart Gift Shop:
- The gift shop is located in the Development Office. The shop hours
are Monday-Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Friday 7:00a.m. to
3:30 p.m.
- Smoking:
- Smoking is not allowed inside SHM/SHST. If you must smoke, please do
it outside the building.
- Social Behavior/Sexual Scandal:
- American culture may seem different from your own personal culture.
Within the last five years, sexually inappropriate behavior has surfaced
in the Church. Inappropriate behavior is always unacceptable and will
not be tolerated at SHM/SHST.
- Please be aware that sexual remarks and/or personal touching are all
considered unacceptable behavior.
- Other inappropriate behavior in the United States includes:
- Students should not take photographs at funerals.
- Any type of racial prejudice is not tolerated in the United States.
Racial jokes, jokes about gender and/or sexual orientation are
unacceptable behavior.
- There are cultural norms relating to use of restroom facilities in
the United States that are sometimes different from what one experiences
in certain other countries. For example, in the U.S., it is illegal for
a person to urinate outdoors, even in a secluded area. The individual
may face serious criminal charges including indecent exposure for
urinating in public places, such as along the roadways or in parks or
recreation areas. It is recommended that you plan ahead on needed
restroom stops. The U.S. has an abundance of public restroom facilities
that should resolve this problem.
- Shouting at others, swearing, and taking the Lord’s name in vain are
all considered unacceptable behavior. Whistling at a woman
or whistling in the house is offensive.
- Female guests are not allowed on the third or fourth floors of the
building. In case they want to visit, they may walk up the back stairs
(fourth floor) to the recreation room.
- Wearing of hats / caps in the building is considered rude and
inappropriate behavior.
- ESL students should not spend the night at the home of others
without informing the Director of the program. Due to the laws
of litigation in the United States, one may be sued if accused of
inappropriate behavior.
- Swimming / Boating / Fishing:
- There will be opportunities provided for those who like to swim,
fish, or go boating. If you plan to share in any of these sports, please
do so in a group or in pairs. The state of Wisconsin requires you to use
a life preserver while in a boat. If you plan to fish, the state also
requires you to have a fishing license. Please see Fr. Paul for help to
obtain these items.
- Telephone Calls:
- In an effort to keep telephone costs to a minimum, ESL students will
not be allowed to make unnecessary calls. However, pre-paid telephone
cards to call outside the United States will be available for purchase
from Fr. Paul’s office. If you need to make an emergency call, please
contact Fr. Paul; Fr. Paul will help in any and every emergency. The
best times to call overseas are before 7:00 a.m. or after 11:00 p.m. It
is much cheaper if you can communicate with your family via e-mail.
- Telephone Voice Mail:
- To record your name:
- Upon your initial arrival at SHST, you should record a voicemail
announcement on your phone in order to receive telephone messages when
you are not in your room.
- From your room, dial 6960 and follow the instructions. An example
message could be the following: “Hello, this is (your name). I am not
available right now. Please leave a message after the tone. Thank
you.”
- To get your message:
- From inside the building…dial 6960 followed by your room number
and the #. (In your room you do not have to dial the extension number,
you only have to press #).
- Dial the password, which is 13579, followed by #.
- To log in, press 2 to get messages. The system will then tell you
if you have any messages.
- To listen to a message, press 0.
- Press *3 to delete the message and then hang-up.
- To make outside calls:
- For a local call, dial 9 and then the number.
- For a long distance credit call on AT&T lines, dial
9-1-800-225-5288.
- For a call inside SHST, dial 0 for the receptionist or check the
SHST phone listing in your room.
- Trash Disposal:
- Students will be provided with plastic bags for garbage. When the
bags are full, please tie them at the top and take them to the large bin
in the basement near the elevator.
- Work Schedule / Community:
- Everyone will be asked to help with community work around the
monastery. During the summer, we need help with cleaning the sacristy,
the recreation room, the laundry, and the TV rooms. Students will be
given a schedule to help SHM/SHST maintain these areas. Please remember
to lock doors after being in these rooms.
- Classrooms:
- It is essential that the ESL classrooms are locked at night. The
last person who leaves the room must turn off the lights and the air
conditioning/heating, close the windows, and lock the doors. In
addition, two students will be assigned “key duty” each week to ensure
compliance.
- Building Art Works:
- Fr. A. Angelico Koller’s Stained Glass Windows: Hanging
prominently at SHM/SHST are stained glass windows designed by “Doc”
Koller. The windows in the main lobby and in the dining room are from
the Sacred Heart Chapel in Great Barrington, Mass. These windows were
based on the Litany of the Sacred Heart; but unfortunately, nine of the
original windows are missing. The windows located in the classroom area,
and in the hallway leading to the dining room, originally decorated the
side altars at The Divine Heart Seminary in Donaldson, Indiana.
- G.E. Mullan (Artist): Mr. Mullan’s work is displayed
prominently throughout SHM/SHST. Born and raised in Texas, Mullan has a
special appreciation for the land and the peoples of the American
Southwest. This is obvious in much of his work which reflects a wide
knowledge and a deep appreciation of the native cultures of the
Americas.
- Mullan’s imagery often has a religious aspect. It incorporates the
collaboration between the historical icons and mosaics of the Santos
figures of Mexico and the Southwest and the illuminated icons and
mosaics of Western Europe with their Byzantine style. Six original
paintings: Christ in the New Millenium; The Good Shepherd; and Noli Me
Tangere; Leo John Dehon; The Sacred Heart and Matthias Forhman grace the
newly decorated lobby. Mr. Mullan lives with his wife Celina in San
Antonio, Texas where he maintains his studio.
Community Information:
- Spiritual Direction/Reconciliation:
- If you need spiritual direction or to go to reconciliation, Fr. Paul will assist you in finding someone.
- Finance:
- Each SCJ student will be given a stipend every month. Use the
stipend carefully and plan your expenditures accordingly. The money is
to be used for personal items such as movies, entertainment, hygiene,
haircuts and field trips. You will be asked to pay a small amount for
the field trips. Please do not lend or borrow money from each
other.
- Community Gatherings:
- The SCJ community will gather every weekday morning, Monday
through Friday at 7:30 a.m., for morning prayers and at 7:45-8:15 a.m. for
Mass and 8:45 for housekeeping. Adoration is at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. All ESL
students are expected to attend.
- The SCJ community will gather every Monday, Tuesday dan Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
On these evenings, ESL students will take part in community “ethnic
nights” where they will cook foods from their native countries. We
will eat dinner at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays in the ESL recreation
room.
- Once a month we will celebrate the birthdays of students.
- Religious Activities:
- There will be daily readers for the liturgy, adoration, and
morning prayers. A schedule will be prepared for all readers for the
months of July, August, and September. Information on the sacristy,
wine, hosts, water, linens, books, keys, vestments, albs, etc. will be
provided by Fr. Paul. All religious services will be held in the IHM
Chapel, located in the basement. In the fall semester, the ESL students
will take part in the seminary religious program on Wednesdays and
Fridays. There will be practice sessions for the daily readings during
the ESL pronunciation classes.
ESL Program
Academic Guidelines
- Attendance:
- Students are expected to attend classes every day. You are
expected to be in the classroom, in your seat, on time, when the class
begins at 9:00 am daily. If you are unable to attend because of an
illness, please inform the ESL Program Director, Fr. Paul, and/or the
Academic Coordinator, as soon as possible. All students ARE
REQUIRED to take part in the Thursday cultural field trip
activities and ARE REQUIRED to use the Self-Access
facilities from 2:00 to 3:00 Monday through Wednesday.
- Computer Regulations:
- Students are forbidden to access any pornographic sites. It is
SHST policy and is punishable by expulsion. It is also a U.S.
governmental policy; and if pornography is downloaded, it could lead
to arrest and imprisonment.
- There are to be no downloaded items from the internet.
- Computers in the ESL Self-Access Center, and in the SHST library,
have special equipment installed on them to prevent any items from
being saved. If you wish to save your work, you must use the floppy
disk that you are given when you enter the program or a USB memory
stick.
- Do NOT uninstall the anti-virus on the computers.
- Personal email use is also forbidden on the ESL computers.
Students may use the computers in the SHST library area or see Fr.
Paul who has a computer for e-mailing purposes.

- Class Expectations:
- The SHST ESL program requires all students to show interest in
their classes, to actively participate, to support one another, and to
work to the best of their abilities.
- Students must speak English only when in class and
also OUTSIDE of class. This is especially important at lunch time and
in the evenings. At the meals you will be expected to sit with someone
who does not speak your language. SHST is an English-speaking
environment, and students are expected to respect that.
- Students are expected to use the support-staff help, especially
for work with their liturgical readings in the afternoons.
- Students are expected to do all their homework on time and to type
all assignments.
- Plagiarism is considered unacceptable. You must do your own work,
and you must not copy verbatim from other authors.
- Students are expected to be on time for all classes.
- Fieldtrips:
- ESL fieldtrips are part of the program, and students are expected to
participate. Students will be charged a small monetary contribution for
each fieldtrip which will be collected by Fr. Paul a day before the
event. If a student chooses not to go on a field trip, and the tickets
have been paid for in advance, the student will be held responsible for
the price of the activity.
- Homework:
- Students are required to do about four hours of work every
day after classes. Homework is an important part of the course
and must be completed, and done on the computer, and submitted, on time.
- Self-Access:
- Students are expected to spend at least four hours per week working
on course-related activities in the Self-Access area. A textbook will be
provided, and students are expected to use it. There will be staff
