"Teaching and Financing"

By Carlos Ruiz-Santos

Before I came to the US to continue my studies for the priesthood, I worked in Holy Mary of Guadalupe Seminary as a teacher and a finance officer. This was my first job for three years. As a teacher, I taught four subjects in High School: they were Study Methods, Mexican History, Latino American Literature, and Religious Formation. Teaching was my favorite part of that job because it gave me the opportunity to discover that the education of young people can be based on the personal abilities of each student and their tendencies to excel in a particular subject, but I never forgot the importance of discipline and constancy by teachers and students. As a finance officer, I administrated the Seminary income and took special care of the students' nutrition. Financing was not really enjoyable because many times I found myself worried when the seminary income was insufficient to cover the various necessities of that educational institution. However, I learned something more valuable than to look for ways how to get money for the seminary; it was to trust completely in God. During my first job as a teacher and finance officer, I became like a student. I learned from my students to improve my teaching methods and to take advantage of their strengths. Administrating was as a proof of trust in God rather than depending on what I could have. Besides all of this, I realized that Math is not one of my strengths!
