A Day in Beautiful Milwaukee

A Day in Beautiful Milwaukee
Fr. Joaquim garrido Mendes, S.C.J.
(Portugal)

On our last fieldtrip, we went to Milwaukee. We visited the Milwaukee Art Museum and afterwards, the Italian Fest.

I enjoyed the Milwaukee Art Museum. It's a beautiful building on the edge of Lake Michigan and was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The works of art at the Art Museum mixed classical art with modern works. Some works were unusual; but the Museum has a good collection.

After visiting the Museum, the ESL group had a picnic in the park on Lake Michigan. It was hot, and we sat in the shade and talked. Some people went for a walk, and others played "Frisbee". Some of us took naps! Afterwards, we visited "Italian Fest". Milwaukee is very interesting as every week in the summer it has different summer festivals for the people of the city. This week the festival was dedicated to Italian immigrants who came and settled in Milwaukee in the past. I thought the festival was very good - it had bands playing live Italian music, and there was lots of Italian food. I liked the Italian songs, and the Italian singers acting out Opera passages. It was a good way to remember "Bella Italia".

It was a different kind of day for the ESL program, and also it was a good day. It allowed us to know America a little better, and helped us to get to know the other students in our classes better too.
