The Culture Fair

On September 6th, the ESL students participated in Sacred Heart School of Theology's annual ESL culture fair. It was a really wonderful afternoon of talking and sharing with others about our individual countries and cultures, and we all had the greatest time.
All the ESL students worked in the afternoons the week before the fair getting ready for the big day. We spoke to Barb, who runs the food services, and we found recipes off the internet for different types of food that are typical of our countries' cuisine. Barb, and the cooking staff, helped us to create really mouth-watering food, and they helped us to put really good traditional appetizers and drinks on our individual tables. Barb and Ruth helped us with the shopping, and Andrea and some of the students put together a nice exhibit with the flags of all the countries to welcome visitors into the dining hall where we held the fair.
On the day of the fair, we had table exhibits from all our different counties: from Portugal, with a power-point presentation, and from Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, the Democratic Congo, Vietnam, and of course - there was a Jamaican table with Fr. Paul's wonderful rum punch for everyone to try! We had artifacts, traditional foods, and drinks from our countries on our tables, and a lot of us wore native dress. In addition, we had music playing from all our different countries, and our flags were displayed. We all had prepared maps and information to share about our countries, and it was a really good experience for all of us to discuss with the other people at the fair about our countries and about our impressions of the United States.
Seminarian students, staff, teachers, guests, and the priests, brothers, and others who live and work at Sacred Heart School of Theology all came to take part in the Culture Fair, and it was a really enjoyable occasion of eating, talking, meeting, and discussing. It was fun, and I think that everyone enjoyed and appreciated all the hard work that the kitchen staff, Barb, the teachers, and especially the students, put into the Culture Fair to make it the success it was.
Thank you to everyone who took part - it was great, and we look forward to the next year's Culture Fair at the end of the summer in 2003!
