Madeira Island - A Place of Tradition and Beauty Fr. Juan Noite, S.C.J. (Venezuela/Portugal)
Madeira Island is 57 km long and 22 km wide and is 1000 km from the Portuguese coast - it is an hour and a half by airplane from Madeira to Lisbon.
About 250 000 people live in the Madeira archipelago, according to 1991 census figures. The capital of the island is Funchal where half of the population lives.
This island, because of its mild climate and natural beauty, is known as "The Pearl of the Atlantic", and it is mostly a tourist destination especially for English and German tourists.
Today, the tourism industry is the island's biggest claim to fame. Since the middle of the 19th century, doctors have recommended Madeira's mild climate as a possible cure for pulmonary diseases. A lot of people have come to the Madeira Archipelago since the 19th century for health reasons.
Today Madeira is known all over the world by the diversity of its beauty, its splendid climate, and above all, by the excellent quality of its tourist services and for its population's kindness.
The island has several well-known traditions: one of these is the craft of embroidery.
Madeira's food and drink are also well-appreciated by visitors to our island.
