The ESL Times / Summer, 2002

This summer the ESL program had its very own summer soccer team. It was a great experience as we all had to speak English when we practiced and played together as we all spoke so many different languages! We practiced one or two times a week out in the front of Sacred Heart Monastery, and then we played three big games over the course of the summer. We played twice against the ESL students at the English as a Second Language Program from the University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee. They were very good, and as most of their players were younger than our players, they won both times - however, we put up a good fight each game! The scores were very close each time, and we played very well.
Fr. Paul and Ruth and her children came to help cheer us on in two of the games…Ruth's son Michael also played with us to help our Sacred Heart ESL team. Abe, who worked for the program this summer, and his father Eduardo also played for us. Eduardo was our Goal-keeper, and he played very, very well. Our captain was Fr. Demetrius from Brazil; and he was not only a good player, but very good also as our captain. He held some training sessions for us, discussed our strategies, and organized us when we were out playing. He called Fr. Zeferino our "secret weapon" as he was the one player who made all of our goals for us! Thank you Fr. Zeferino for the goals!
Playing for the ESL soccer team was a really fun thing to do. Afterwards, we went out and had ice cream and talked to the students from UWM, and one Sunday we played against the American students here at Sacred Heart School of Theology. It was a good thing to do in the summer - especially as it was the summer of the World Cup!
