My Hometown
By: Jose Antonio Estrada
(Mexico)

picture of OcotlanI have been to a lot of places, sometimes for vacation and other times for work. In each one of them, I have had bad experiences and good experiences, and also I have had wonderful adventures. But my favorite place that I would like to talk about is my hometown Ocotlan.

The reason that I have chosen to write about my town is because all of my friends live there, and I prefer being with them to traveling. It’s nice to see new places, and to know about them; I don’t deny that. But it would be nicer if I could be with my friends and also see new places.

My town is not large, but it is certainly one of the bigger ones in the state. There are perhaps 100,000 inhabitants or maybe a little more. But our customs are similar to that of a small town because the families like to walk in the park and socialize around the church. You can see families with their children from all ages. Some of the children are running, others are playing, and others are making bubbles from soap foam. You can also see young girls and boys walking and talking together. It may be about nothing interesting, but they are enjoying the moment.

The geography of Ocotlan is interesting too. It has four seasons and each one has its respective features. It also has hills, and that is where I like to go, mainly when it is green. In certain places, you can see Chapala Lake and enjoy the view that it offers you.

Another characteristic of my town is that the people are very religious. More than 70% of the people go to Mass every Sunday. One of the reasons for that may be because about 157 years ago there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed a large part of the town. The day after this disaster, many people went to mass. While they were praying at mass, the sky began to change and when the people looked up at the sky, they saw the body of Jesus Christ on the cross. Since that time, the people have had big celebrations to celebrate this miracle, and they embrace a very devout lifestyle.

In my town, you can find many things, to do. The people are friendly to strangers, and they make you feel at home. We have a rich history. If you want to know more about my town, you should visit it.
