A Camping Trip in Mexico
By:  Eladio Vieyra
(Mexico)

A long time ago, my friend and I went to the mountains to go camping. We were there for two days and two nights. The first night we were hunting for a little while, and we had good luck because we hunted and caught two rabbits and a deer.

The next night was terrible for us though as all sorts of disasters happened. First, we went further from our camp than we had gone with the first night. We ended up near a little stream, and the place was very, very dark. My friend and I stopped for a little while there. After some time waiting for some game, without any luck, my friend said to me, “It is one o’clock in the morning. It is time to go back to our camp and to get some sleep.”

I agreed with him, and as we started to go, we immediately heard the sound of a snake. We had a flashlight and a rifle, so I thought that we would have no problem…we would be able to kill the snake very easily, but when my friend looked at it with the flashlight, the snake rose up, shaking the rattle on its tail, and it started to hiss! It was as tall as we were, and we both backed away. Eventually, it lay down, and little by little, it became very quiet. When we thought the snake was finally asleep, my friend shone his flashlight on the snake, and I shot at it, but I missed – and of course, the noise woke up the snake! It hissed, sounded its rattle, and slid at us very fast to attack us. In the rush, at that moment, we couldn’t shoot again, and the snake got very close to us! Fortunately, my friend found a stick and started to hit the snake. He hit it, and hit it until at last it was killed. It was really a terrible experience, and after that, we almost couldn’t walk. We felt exhausted, and we did not arrive back to our camp until 4:30 am and then, we could not go to sleep immediately. In fact, we felt that we could not stay in that place any longer, and we decided to go home at daybreak. I have not gone back there to that site for camping again.
