A Polish Christmas in Krakow
By:  Fr. Gabriel Pisarek, SCJ
(Poland)

In Poland, we have many customs connected to Christmas. On Christmas Eve, everybody makes a beautiful supper. We usually prepare many tributes, especially for the occasion which are prepared only one time a year. Each family meets for supper. Before supper, the children decorate the Christmas trees, and after supper, everyone sings Christmas carols. At night, everybody goes to Church. In Poland, Christmas is a special occasion for family.

I live in Krakow. It is a big city in the south of Poland, and it was the capital of Poland in the past. Today, it’s the old capital and a culture center for the country. It has an interesting history, and today Krakow has many museums and old monuments that weren’t destroyed in the war. They are beautiful and many of them have recently been renovated.

The city also has many churches. They are beautiful. Krakow doesn’t have many big sidewalks, but it has small footpaths, so it is a good place to visit by foot. Krakow does impress. It doesn’t bore. I really love Krakow. It is impossible not to love this city. It is especially beautiful at Christmas time. I recommend that you come and visit this lovely Polish city at some time in your life.
