My First Days in Hales Corners
By:  Manuel Jesus Grilo Rubio
(Spain)

When I think about my own experience of visiting other cultures, I realize that I am a big lover of my lifestyle, the lifestyle of my own country, Spain.

I arrived in the USA on the 26th of June. I have been here almost two months now. My first impression here, I can’t describe it. In Philadelphia airport, I saw a multitude of Spanish people, people from other countries, American people…and I was very much confused, because everything seemed very strange – even the policemen and policewomen in the airport and the employees working there seemed odd. It seemed to me that they were speaking by shouting at all the people! In that airport there were small electric cars that I had never seen before, only on TV. Everyone was moving around on the cars, and I thought, “Oh my God! The people here can’t walk to go to their terminals! They need strange taxis!”

So, that was my first impression, but when I arrived in Milwaukee, I had an even greater surprise as I found that here the people are very kind. Everyone has been good to me here…even once when I was in a restaurant, there was a waiter who helped me with the American money as I didn’t know how to use it, and he explained it to me, and, incredibly (for me), he spoke Spanish! So, people are helpful here and kind.

Now I feel that I am very comfortable in this country. The people in this school are kind and friendly, and they have shown me that we, really, are a congregation as we are supposed to be. I am happy to be here.
