Riding a Bike
By: Fr. Thomas Runggaldier, SDS
(Austria)

Riding a bike is not as good as driving a car in your leisure time. On weekends, many people leave their cities to find a retreat in nature or in the mountains. They pack all their needs for the trip or a picnic into their car. They can carry whatever they want for swimming, or traveling, or fishing. It’s easy. Even when the weather is bad, a person can drive to a museum, go to the theater or go shopping; all with their regular clothes on because it is possible in the car to have whatever temperature they want. If their relatives are far away, even 100 miles away, is not a problem if one has a car.

However, cars are not all good. For example, a person’s health isn’t improved by sitting in a car. That’s quite different when riding a bike. In most occupations people have very little movement. But everyone needs movement. Even people who say they have no time or fancy to try biking, may do exercise. Some people even have got a ‘home trainer’. But it’s much better to be in nature, to have fresh air and to see a bit more of our surroundin. In addition, on a bicycle, it is possible for people to pace themselves and to have no stress during rush hours. And, having a bicycle is not that expensive…it does not cost much money for a bike, and you pay nothing at all for gas which pollutes the environment.

In conclusion, you can see that with a bike you will have much more fun in your spare-time –finally retreat is purpose than you would driving a car. Biking is good for saving money, adding movement, losing weight, and having fun. Those are all important requirements in life.
