The Fieldtrip

group pictureAn old water pumping station in Milwaukee is now being used as a kind of museum and a relaxing place to go and drink coffee. Among one of the sites our ESL class visited during our field trip was Alterra Café. It is located in an old building situated along Lake Michigan in Milwaukee. The Alterra café building used to be worked as an old pumping station for getting clean water for the people in Milwaukee, but now it is used as a museum site and a cafe.

I enjoyed looking at the engineering that was used to do the pumping. The method used in this machine was interesting. An electric motor was used to drive a big pump. Also, there were three big tanks fixed inside the building. When each of the tanks was filled with liquid, each one could hold approximately four to five hundred liters of water. These tanks were used as transformers for the electrical pumping system. I thought that all the systems fixed in the building looked old, but they were still interesting.

Moreover, inside the building there is a wonderful café. There are many things served in this lake-side café – there are all kinds of coffee from all around the world to drink there. I saw Mexican coffee, Brazilian coffee, and African coffee. Also you may find a lot of different kinds of juice, and other delicious food to eat there too.

Although this place has many attractive things to recommend it, there is one negative thing. The space inside the building is too narrow, and you can’t pass by the tables and the other customers very easily.
